After the success of our first year of cross-curricular and STEAM workshops we are pleased to be able to offer our first summer holiday workshops: SUMMER LABS.

Aimed at 11-13 years, in the first week of the summer holidays you have the choice of two different cross-curricular masterclasses to help your child to experience science in a completely different way.

Whether your young person sees themselves having a career in the sciences or more interested in visual art and music, these day-long fun and challenging workshops could be just the thing they need to start their summer holidays.

With the generous help of The Royal Society of Chemistry we are able to offer our ‘Making Music with Chemistry’ workshop completely free of charge for children with SEND and/or who self-identify as neurodiverse.

You will have The MoSAIC’s founder Gaz, an artist and former teacher, as your facilitator with tailored help from experienced learning support assistants too.

Expressive Explosions: Making ‘Pop’ Music with Chemistry

Students testing for the presence of hydrogen gas

Book onto one of these full-day masterclasses fully funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry for students with SEND or who self identify as neurodiverse. We have 40 free spaces over two days for your child to experience how we can use chemistry to make music. Starting with experiments to determine the reactivity of metals and how to test for hydrogen gas, students will sample the ‘pop’ created by the hydrogen test in different sized vessels.

Not only will this give students a better understanding of the underlying chemistry but also how sounds are produced.

After lunch we will use these sampled sounds to produce a melody and chemistry inspired lyrics.

These sessions are specifically for students with Special Educational Needs and will have support from Learning Support Assistants.

FREE of charge but booking is essential. We only have 40 places.

FAQs

  • The Learning Lab is a fully fitted educational science lab run by Science Creates Outreach in their Old Market site in the heart of Bristol.

Address: Science Creates, Midland Rd, Bristol BS2 0NS

  • Students should arrive at Science Creates rom 9:15am for a 9:30 start. They will be with us all day until 3pm with a 15 min break in the morning and 45 mins for lunch. Students will need prior parental consent to be able to leave the site at the end of the day alone.

  • The MoSAIC’s founder, Gaz, is an artist and former science teacher with over 8 years experience working in state schools. His vision is to create unique learning experiences where young people can learn the arts and the sciences side by side. We will also have tailored support from our wonderful experienced learning support assistants Nici and Nay.

  • Our maximum capacity in the lab is 20 students.

  • These sessions are designed for 11-13 year olds to get the most out of them however we won’t say no to children who want to do these sessions and who are close to this age range.

  • There is no reason why they need to, but parents and guardians are welcome to spend the day with us free of charge if this is a requirement of the child. Please bear in mind however that space inside the Learning Lab is limited, so parents and guardians would have to wait on the seats in the foyer. We also have to be aware that Science Creates is a work space so please contact us via info@themosaic.uk if this is something you would require.

  • This is our first summer school programme. We have worked hard to secure funding for all of the days but have only got funding for the 1st and 2nd of August dates. The art forensics workshop is delivered at cost price if you get the early bird price (£55) but we may be able to subsidise a couple of places for students who have experienced disadvantage. Please contact info@themosaic.uk to see how we can help.

  • This is our first week of holiday activities. It is our plan to put more on in the future and expand this programme. You can however book sessions for your school or community group if it is something you would like for a specific date. See what we currently offer here.

  • Our funding from the RSC is to engage neurodiverse children and children with SEND in chemistry. However if we have the demand to put on an extra date of this session it is a possibility so please do get in touch.

  • We have two different 1-day-long activities over five days. You are welcome to book multiple days to experience both activities e.g. 29th July and 1st August but your child probably wouldn’t want to repeat an activity.

  • Yes please. We will provide a snack at break time though. Students will not be able to leave site to get lunch.

If you are booked onto the free sessions then the Royal Society of Chemistry has funded lunch. Any dietary requirements and allergies will be checked with you via questionnaire after you book. Students are of course welcome to bring their own food on these funded days if they prefer.

  • Of course. We will provide all parent/guardians with a questionnaire via email after booking. This will allow you to tell us important information like this. This information will not be stored past the event and will only be shared with necessary people, such as our wonderful learning support assistants Nici and Nay.

  • We would be happy to discuss this. Please get in touch via info@themosaic.uk
